A six-months study on Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) based diets in zebrafish
- BiologyScientific Reports
- 2019
Aside a general reduction in fish growth and lipid steatosis, six-months feeding on Black Soldier Fly based diets did not show major negative effects on zebrafish and both stress markers and immune response markers did not shows significant differences among the experimental groups.
Fishmeal Dietary Replacement Up to 50%: A Comparative Study of Two Insect Meals for Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
- Biology, Environmental ScienceAnimals : an open access journal from MDPI
- 2022
Insight is provided into an experiment carried out on rainbow trout with a 50% replacement of FM with different larvae insect meals: Hermetia illucens (HI), and Tenebrio molitor (TM), which showed better results for growth, protein utilization and more active digestive function, supported by intestinal histological changes.
Can Insect-Based Diets Affect Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Reproduction? A Multidisciplinary Study.
- BiologyZebrafish
- 2020
While fish were perfectly able to cope with a 25% insect meal dietary inclusion, a 50% inclusion level caused the overexpression of genes involved in lipid metabolism, a general reduction in the number of spawned eggs, and differences in the frequency rate of previtellogenic oocytes.
The Effect of Hydrolyzed Insect Meals in Sea Trout Fingerling (Salmo trutta m. trutta) Diets on Growth Performance, Microbiota and Biochemical Blood Parameters
- Medicine, BiologyAnimals : an open access journal from MDPI
- 2020
In conclusion, insect meals may be an alternative protein source in sea trout nutrition, as they yield satisfying growth performance and have the capability to modulate biochemical blood parameters and microbiota composition.
Black Soldier Fly, Hermetia illucens as an Alternative to Fishmeal Protein and Fish Oil: Impact on Growth, Immune Response, Mucosal Barrier Status, and Flesh Quality of Juvenile Barramundi, Lates calcarifer (Bloch, 1790)
- Environmental ScienceBiology
- 2021
It was confirmed that BSF could substitute 30% fishmeal and fish oil successfully without compromising the growth of barramundi and improved bactericidal activity, immune-related cytokine expression, and mucin cells in both gut and skin which are an indication of improved immunity of barramsundi.

Rearing Zebrafish on Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens): Biometric, Histological, Spectroscopic, Biochemical, and Molecular Implications.
- Biology, Environmental ScienceZebrafish
- 2018
Results of biometry, fatty acid composition, expression of genes involved in fish growth, stress response, lipid metabolism, gut inflammation, and liver macromolecular composition suggested a possible application of insect larvae for zebrafish larval rearing, however, further studies are necessary to better understand the use of this insect species in the rearing of fish.

Fishmeal Alternative Protein Sources for Aquaculture Feeds
- Biology
- 2018
This chapter aims at critically reviewing recent studies about the effects of the inclusion of new protein sources as insect, poultry by-products, meat and bone meals and other protein sources alternative to fishmeal in aquafeeds, in terms of growth, nutrient digestibility, fillet quality traits and sensorial perception in the most important farmed marine and freshwater fish species.

It is shown that inclusion of the brown algae Ascophyllum nodosum in the substrate for black soldier fly larvae can introduce valuable nutrients, commonly associated with the marine environment, into the larvae.
Effect of dietary probiotics on clownfish: a molecular approach to define how lactic acid bacteria modulate development in a marine fish.
- BiologyAmerican journal of physiology. Regulatory, integrative and comparative physiology
