Cell migration occurs in many different contexts. Amoebae and other isolated cells migrate in culture. In animals, 'professional' migratory cells of the immune system constantly survey the body for intruders, whereas other cell types perform specific developmentally regulated migrations. One simple model for the latter type of event is migration of border cells during Drosophila oogenesis.
