Antimitotic doses of colchicine inhibit ciliogenesis in tissue cultures of amphibian embryonic epidermis. Different stages of ciliogenesis can be impeded by administering the drug to explants taken from donors of different ages. Colchicine blocks the formation of both centrioles and ciliary shafts when applied to explants from relatively young neurulae.
