Biofiltration is a suitable method for eliminating volatile biodegradable organic chemical from waste gases. However, if substances inhibiting microbiological activity are present in the waste gas, biofiltration efficiencies will be poor. Results are presented on inhibition of biofiltration by SO2. Inhibition was observed first in a pilot scale experiment on odor abatement in a food processing factory.
