Poly (ADP-ribose) synthetase (PARS) is a nuclear enzyme activated by strand breaks in DNA which are caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Inhibitors of PARS activity reduce the degree of reperfusion injury of the heart in vivo and in vitro.
