Inhibition of virus multiplication and alteration of cyclic AMP level in cell cultures by flavonoids

title={Inhibition of virus multiplication and alteration of cyclic AMP level in cell cultures by flavonoids},
  author={Ilona Mucsi and Béla M. Prágai},
The inhibitory effect of four flavonoid compounds on virus multiplication and their influence on the intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) level were studied in cell cultures. Quercetin and quercitrin reduced the yields ofHuman (alpha) herpesvirus 1 (HSV-1) andSuid (alpha) herpesvirus 1 (pseudorabies virus), but hesperidin and rutin had no effect. Further, quercetin and quercitrin elevated the intracellular level of cAMP, whereas hesperidin and rutin did not alter the cAMP level. Both antiviral…
Inhibitory effects of quercetin 3-rhamnoside on influenza A virus replication.
Antiherpetic activities of flavonoids against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2)in vitro
When flavonoids were applied at various concentrations to Vero cells infected by HSV-1 and 2, most of the flavonoid showed inhibitory effects on virus-induced CPE, indicating that an intracellular effect may also be involved.
The inhibitory effects of 12 medicinal plants and their component compounds on lipid peroxidation.
The results indicate that the medicinal plants and their polyphenols show promise as therapeutic agents for various disorders involving free radical reactions, suggesting that glycosylation increases the antioxidative activity of quercetin.
In vitro antiviral activities of Caesalpinia pulcherrima and its related flavonoids.
The mode of action of quercetin against HSV-1 and ADV-3 was found to be at the early stage of multiplication and with SI values greater than 20, suggesting the potential use of this compound for treatment of the infection caused by these two viruses.
Phytotoxicity and Other Adverse Effects on the In Vitro Shoot Cultures Caused by Virus Elimination Treatments: Reasons and Solutions
This review summarizes the harmful effects of virus elimination treatments applied on tissue cultures reported in the literature and expound the solutions that can be used to mitigate phytotoxic and other adverse effects in practice.
Review on the Bioactivities of Quercetin
Owing to the potential pharmaceutical properties of quercetin, the bioactivities, principle uses and mechanisms involved in the treatment of various diseases were reviewed in this paper and safety issues involved in its partake by humans have also been discussed.
Bioactivity‐guided Fractionation of Phyllanthus orbicularis and Identification of the Principal Anti HSV‐2 Compounds
This is the first study of extensive fractionation and phytochemical characterization of phenolic compounds from P. orbicularis, a Cuban‐endemic medicinal plant, and the inhibition of several HSV‐2 early replication events and DNA synthesis were observed.

Interaction between cyclic nucleotides and herpes simplex viruses: productive infection
Infection of human fibroblasts and HEp-2 cells with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) produced a decrease in the intracellular levels of cyclic adenosine 5'- monophosphate (cAMP) and a concomitant
Effect of cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP on the activity of interferon against herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, and vesicular stomatitis virus
These studies suggest that the interactions observed between HSV and cyclic nucleotides might account for the relatively refractive nature of HSV, as compared to VSV, toward the antiviral activity of IFN.
The yield of influenza virus from infected primary chick kidney cells (PCKC) was enhanced by treatment with dcAMP and an adrenergic component in the activation of the PCKC cAMP system is indicated by the effects of certain catecholamines on influenza virus yield.
Effect of treatment with certain flavonoids on Mengo virus-induced encephalitis in mice
SummaryAmong the four flavonoids tested quercetin and morin proved to be significantly effective against lethal Mengo virus-induced encephalitis in mice when the drugs were administered orally
Antipicornavirus flavone Ro 09-0179
It is suggested that Ro 09-0179 interferes with some process of viral replication which occurs between viral uncoating and the initiation of viral RNA synthesis.
Pseudorabies virus and Sindbis virus were propagated in chick embryo fibroblast cells and their infectivity was estimated by the plaque method on chick embryo Fibroblast monolayers.
Effect of murine beta-interferon preparation on phagocytosis and cyclic AMP levels in mouse peritoneal macrophages.
Simultaneous addition of MuIFN-beta and the adenylcyclase inhibitor N-ethylmaleimide to the MPM cultures prevented the rise in cAMP levels but not the increased phagocytic capacity.
