PURPOSE To determine the potential role of ClC-3, a PKC-inhibitable Cl(-) channel, in mediating the swelling-activated Cl(-) current (I(Cl,swell)) of native bovine nonpigmented ciliary epithelial (NPE) cells. METHODS Native bovine NPE cells were freshly harvested by enzymatic digestion. Whole-cell currents were recorded by patch-clamp measurements either in the presence or absence of a functional anti-ClC-3 antibody. RESULTS Baseline whole-cell currents were small under isotonic conditions…

Swelling-activated Cl- channels support Cl- secretion by bovine ciliary epithelium.
TLDR
ICl,swell of NPE cells is functionally expressed in intact ciliary epithelium and is oriented to subserve aqueous humor formation, and may be stimulated by increased stromal fluid uptake and delivery to the N PE cells, facilitating Cl- secretion and increasing fluid release into the posterior chamber.
ClC‐3 is a main component of background chloride channels activated under isotonic conditions by autocrine ATP in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells
TLDR
The results suggest that ClC‐3 protein may be a main component of background chloride channels which can be activated under isotonic conditions by autocrine/paracrine ATP through purinergic receptor pathways; the background current is involved in maintenance of basal cell volume.
Overexpression of CLC-3 in HEK293T cells yields novel currents that are pH dependent.
TLDR
ClC-3 overexpression induced a pH-sensitive conductance in HEK293T cells that is biophysically similar to ClC-4 and ClC to be Cl(-)/H(+) antiporters.
DIDS inhibits Na-K-ATPase activity in porcine nonpigmented ciliary epithelial cells by a Src family kinase-dependent mechanism.
TLDR
The evidence points to an inhibitory influence of DIDS on NPE Na-K-ATPase activity by a mechanism that hinges on SFK activation associated with a reduction of cytoplasmic pH.
ClC-3 chloride channel prevents apoptosis induced by thapsigargin in PC12 cells
TLDR
It appears that ClC-3 Cl− channel mediates both cell proliferation and apoptosis through accelerative and inhibitory fashions, respectively.
Hypotonic Activation of Short ClC3 Isoform Is Modulated by Direct Interaction between Its Cytosolic C-terminal Tail and Subcortical Actin Filaments*
TLDR
It is concluded that, by direct interaction with subcortical actin filaments, sClC3 contributes to the hypotonic stress-induced VSOACs in NIH/3T3 cells.

TLDR
The results are consistent with the concept that A(3)-subtype adenosine agonists and swelling activate a common population of Cl(-) channels.

TLDR
A fundamental role of endogenous ClC-3 in the swelling-activated Cl- channels function and cell volume regulation in human gastric epithelial cells is suggested.
The role of ClC‐3 in volume‐activated chloride currents and volume regulation in bovine epithelial cells demonstrated by antisense inhibition
TLDR
It is concluded that endogenous ClC‐3 is associated with the volume‐activated chloride current and is involved in cell volume regulation, but that it can only contribute towards a proportion of the current in NPCE cells.
PKC-sensitive Cl- channels associated with ciliary epithelial homologue of pICln.
TLDR
It is reported that the PKC inhibitor staurosporine upregulates whole cell Cl- currents isosmotically and is likely identical with the volume-activated channels of NPE cells.
Whole cell patch clamping of ciliary epithelial cells during anisosmotic swelling.
TLDR
The RVD triggered by bath hypotonicity primarily reflects increased Cl(-)-channel activity, and data obtained from ion substitutions and the channel blockers quinidine and 5-nitro-2-(3-phenylpropylamino)-benzoate indicate that most of the hypotonic-induced conductance reflects stationary Cl-channel activity.
A3 adenosine receptors regulate Cl-channels of nonpigmented ciliary epithelial cells.
TLDR
It is concluded that human HCE cells and rabbit ciliary processes possess A3 receptors and that adenosine can activate Cl- channels in NPE cells by stimulating these A3receptors.

Protein kinase C stimulates swelling-induced chloride current in canine atrial cells
TLDR
It is concluded that PKC activity stimulates and does not prevent the activation of dog atrial ICl,swell, and these results contrast with reports of PKC-dependent inhibition of rabbit atrialICl, Swell and currents conducted by ClC-3, a putative clone for ICl-swell.

Association of ClC-3 Channel with Cl− Transport by Human Nonpigmented Ciliary Epithelial Cells
TLDR
Results support the concept that the volume-sensitive protein pICln regulates the Cl− channels, and that the same conduits subserve volume- and staurosporine-activated Cl− release.
