Sulfonamide antibiotics, typified by sulfamethazine (SMZ), are widely used in veterinary practice. Sulfonamide residues in milk and meat products are of regulatory concern since SMZ is a thyroid carcinogen in rodents and sulfonamide-induced hypersensitivity reactions, including hypothyroidism, have been reported in humans.
