Parathion (PS) and chlorpyrifos (CPF) are organophosphorus insecticides, which elicit toxicity following biotransformation to the potent acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, paraoxon (PO) and chlorpyrifos oxon (CPO). Both oxons have also been shown to interact directly with muscarinic receptors coupled to inhibition of adenylyl cyclase.
