While testing purines related to the non-specific protein kinase inhibitors N6-dimethylaminopurine and N6-(delta 2-isopentenyl)adenine as potential inhibitors of the p34cdc2/cyclin B kinase, we discovered a compound with high specificity, 2-(2-hydroxyethylamino)-6- benzylamino-9-methylpurine (olomoucine).
