Selective alpha 1 adrenergic receptor antagonists are used to reduce the dynamic component of urethral obstruction in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Their effectiveness is presumed to result from blockade of alpha 1 adrenergic receptors within the prostatic smooth muscle.
