Of 15 strains of coliform bacteria, all isolated from human feces, 14 inhibited the growth of Shigellaflexneri in mixed culture. In every case, when inhibition occurred, exponential growth of Shigella was interrupted in the mixed culture and the organisms entered into either a stationary or a death phase.
