Alzheimer's disease is characterized pathologically by extracellular amyloid beta protein (Abeta) deposition in the brain. The Abeta peptide, a 39-42 amino acid fragment, is derived from defined proteolysis of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) [Glenner et al., Appl.
