Abstract The infrared spectra of the common α-amino acids in aqueous solution in tile region 6.5–11 μ (1538–909 cm −1 ) are presented and discussed. In addition, the spectra of related amino acids, e.g. ethionine, β-alanine and other α- and non-α-amino acids are presented. The results show that it is possible to obtain distinct, characteristic spectra for many of the compounds examined.
