Information Theory is one of those rare scientific fields to which one can assign a definite beginning. The publication in 1948 of Claude E. Shannon’s celebrated paper, “A Mathematical theory of Communication”, marks the birth of Information Theory as clearly as the Declaration of Independence in 1776 marked the birth of a country.
