We examined the information processing capabilities of children diagnosed with the inattentive subtype of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who had been characterized as having a sluggish cognitive tempo. Children referred for school-related problems (n = 81) and nonreferred community controls (n = 149) participated. Of the referred children, 24 met criteria for ADHD, 42 met criteria for reading disability (RD), and 9 of these were comorbid for RD and ADHD. Children with ADHD…

Results showed that the clinical groups produced longer first fixation duration than the control group in all types of distractors and children with ADHD comorbid DD were more susceptible to characters with the distracting red color in gaze duration and total viewing time than were children with pure ADHD and healthy controls.

The pattern of results suggested that abnormal attending during testing is a statistical marker, rather than a mediator, of ADHD performance deficits, which confirms the importance of examining covert processes, as well as behavioural abnormalities when trying to understand the psychopathophyiology of ADHD.
