Influenza Vaccination During Pregnancy: A Critical Assessment of the Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)
@inproceedings{Ayoub2006InfluenzaVD, title={Influenza Vaccination During Pregnancy: A Critical Assessment of the Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)}, author={David M Ayoub and Edward Yazbak}, year={2006} }
Influenza vaccination during all trimesters of pregnancy is now universally recommended in the United States. We critically reviewed the influenza vaccination policy of the CDCis Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice (ACIP) and the citations that were used to support their recommendations. The ACIPis citations and the current literature indicate that influenza infection is rarely a threat to a normal pregnancy. There is no convincing evidence of the effectiveness of influenza vaccination…

Although the immunogenicity of influenza vaccination in pregnancy in mother and infant has been well documented, this study was unable to demonstrate the effectiveness of influenza vaccine with data for hospital admissions and physician visits, suggesting typical influenza surveillance measures based on utilization data are not reliable in distinguishing influenza from other respiratory illness.

It is possible that immunization of pregnant women can provide sufficient protection of the newborn infants by transfer of antibodies through the placenta if (1) a more potent influenza vaccine, possibly used with booster dosing, is administered, and the women deliver just prior to or during the influenza season.

The large risks of not vaccinating children far outweigh the unknown and probably much smaller risk, if any, of cumulative exposure to thimerosal-containing vaccines over the first 6 months of life, and the US Public Health Service (USPHS), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and vaccine manufacturers agree that thimeral vaccines should be removed as soon as possible.

Exposure to mercury from TCVs administered in the US was a consistent significant risk factor for the development of NDs and it is clear that additional ND research should be undertaken in the context of evaluating mercury-associated exposures and thimerosal-free vaccines should be made available.
