Influenza kills and hospitalizes many people every year. Although the 2015–2016 influenza season was relatively mild, we should remain vigilant in our efforts to reduce the impact of future epidemics or pandemics by implementing universal influenza vaccination and early initiation of antiviral therapy for suspected cases. We don’t expect influenza vaccine to prevent all cases of influenza, since immune response varies depending on age, underlying diseases, and immunosuppression. Despite all the…
Clinical profile and outcome of H1N1 influenza patients in a tertiary care hospital in Kochi, Kerala
TLDR
Vaccination, early recognition of the disease, and prompt initiation of treatment seem to be the only way to reduce H1N1 disease progression and associated mortality.
Characterization of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 Viruses Isolated from Domestic Poultry in China.
TLDR
The whole genomes of eight H5N1 avian influenza viruses isolated from domestic poultry in eastern China were sequenced and compared them with those of typical influenza virus strains to contribute to the elucidation of the biological characterization and pathogenicity of HPAI H 5N1 viruses.
A cross sectional analysis on the clinical presentation and outcome of H1N1 influenza patients in a tertiary care hospital in Central Kerala
TLDR
Pregnancy was associated with higher rate of complications and early respiratory support did not help in preventing progression to respiratory failure in most of the patients and vaccination, early recognition of the disease and prompt initiation of treatment appear to be the only way to reduce H1N1 disease progression and mortality.
Human CD49a+ Lung Natural Killer Cell Cytotoxicity in Response to Influenza A Virus
TLDR
NK cells provided significant antiviral, cytotoxic activity following contact with influenza-infected cells, including the production and release of IFN-γ and granzyme-B resulting in macrophage cell death.

Influenza Activity - United States, 2015-16 Season and Composition of the 2016-17 Influenza Vaccine.
TLDR
Overall influenza activity was moderate this season, with a lower percentage of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI), lower hospitalization rates, and a higher percentage of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) compared with the preceding three seasons.
Benefit of Early Initiation of Influenza Antiviral Treatment to Pregnant Women Hospitalized With Laboratory-Confirmed Influenza.
TLDR
Early initiation of influenza antiviral treatment to pregnant women hospitalized with influenza may reduce the length of stay, especially among those with severe influenza, and annual influenza vaccination is warranted.
Safety of Seasonal Influenza Vaccination in Hospitalized Surgical Patients
TLDR
A study to describe influenza vaccination during inpatient stays for surgery and to evaluate whether vaccination that occurs during that period increases health care utilization after discharge, including postsurgical infection work-ups.
Influenza vaccine prevents medically attended influenza-associated acute respiratory illness in adults aged ≥50 years.
TLDR
Influenza vaccine was moderately effective in preventing influenza-associated medical care visits in older adults and in adults aged ≥65 years.
Positive Contribution of Adjuvanted Influenza Vaccines to the Resolution of Bacterial Superinfections.
TLDR
These studies should help to better understand how differential immunity to influenza skews immune responses toward coinfecting bacteria and discover novel modes to prevent bacterial superinfections in the lungs of persons with influenza.
Live Attenuated Versus Inactivated Influenza Vaccine in Hutterite Children
TLDR
It is hypothesized that a 70% or greater uptake of trivalent LAIV compared with a similar uptake ofTrivalent IIV among healthy children and adolescents would reduce laboratory-confirmed influenza by 50% in the LAIV versus IIV group, which would translate to a reduction in influenza-associated outcomes.

TLDR
Mothers who received seasonal TIV during pregnancy were significantly less likely to experience stillbirth compared with unvaccinated mothers, suggesting a protective effect of seasonal trivalent influenza vaccination during pregnancy.
Association Between Hospitalization With Community-Acquired Laboratory-Confirmed Influenza Pneumonia and Prior Receipt of Influenza Vaccination.
TLDR
Among children and adults hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia, those with laboratory-confirmed influenza-associated pneumonia, compared with those with pneumonia not associated with influenza, had lower odds of having received influenza vaccination.

TLDR
In this observational study, indirect evidence of influenza vaccine safety during pregnancy is found, and women who received vaccine had a reduced risk of delivering a preterm infant during times of high influenza virus circulation.

TLDR
During 2010-2011, influenza vaccination was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of laboratory-confirmed influenza hospitalization among adults aged ≥50 years, regardless of age group.
