The effect of water on the hydrophobic ionic liquid (IL) 1-n-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonylimide) and its Li(+) mixture was evaluated. The electrochemical stability, density, viscosity, and ionic conductivity were measured for both systems in different concentrations of water. The presence of Li(+) causes a large increase in the water absorption ability of the IL. The experimental results suggest a break of the interactions between Li(+) and Tf2N(-) anions in the… Expand

The structure of water in dilute aqueous solutions of ionic liquids: IR and NMR study

Rheological changes and kinetics of water uptake by poly(ionic liquid)-based thin films.
TLDR
The results show that the ionic liquid acts as a plasticizer, reducing the rigidity of the film and decreasing the capacity of water uptake, which affects their mechanical properties, which can reflect in their performances as solid state electrolytes and ion-conducting membranes for electrochemical applications. TLDR
The interactions of the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethylsulfonate with water and the solvation of zinc ions in neat [EMIm]TfO and [EM im-water-water mixtures investigated by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy are reported on. Expand
Effects of dissolved water on Li+ solvation in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ionic liquid studied by NMR.
TLDR
It was found that Li(+) is averagely hydrated by eight water molecules in the ionic liquid solutions and a comparison between the hydrodynamic radius and the mean one-jump distance of Li(+) suggested the formation of water channels in the ionside liquid solutions. Expand

Effects of water concentration on the structural and diffusion properties of imidazolium-based ionic liquid-water mixtures.
TLDR
The authors' simulations revealed major structural changes consistent with a transition from IL-water mixture to aqueous solution in all three ILs at water concentrations around 75 mol %, including rapid increase in the frequency of hydrogen bonds and sudden decrease in cationic stacking at the transition point. Ionization condition of lithium ionic liquid electrolytes under the solvation effect of liquid and solid solvents.
TLDR
It is concluded that the dispersed silica is effective to modify the hydrodynamic lithium species to be appropriate for charge transport as reducing the size and anionic charge of Li(TFSI)4(3-) by removing one or two TFSI- anions. Expand
Transport coefficients, Raman spectroscopy, and computer simulation of lithium salt solutions in an ionic liquid.
TLDR
Molecular dynamics simulations showed that the coordination of Li+ by oxygen atoms of TFSI anions changes with Li+ concentration producing a remarkable change of the RTIL structure with a concomitant reduction of diffusion coefficients of all species in the solutions. Expand

Effect of temperature and water content on the shear viscosity of the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide as studied by atomistic simulations.
TLDR
The simulations suggest that, due to preferential association of water with anions and the formation of water clusters, the excess molar volume is negative, which means that dissolved water is actually less effective at lowering the viscosity of these mixtures when compared to a solute obeying ideal mixing behavior. The Role of Confined Water in Ionic Liquid Electrolytes for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.
TLDR
The results suggest that the optimal water content is ∼10% mole fraction of water molecules (∼1.1 wt %) for applications such as nonvolatile electrolytes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and a strategy for improving the performance of IL DSSC by replacing water with additives that would play the same role as water (since too much water can deteriorate performance at the anode-dye interface).
