Influence of rainfall and beaver dams on upstream movement of spawning Atlantic salmon in a restored brook in Nova scotia, Canada
@article{Taylor2009InfluenceOR, title={Influence of rainfall and beaver dams on upstream movement of spawning Atlantic salmon in a restored brook in Nova scotia, Canada}, author={Barry R. Taylor and C. Macinnis and Trevor A. Floyd}, journal={River Research and Applications}, year={2009}, volume={26} }
In a restored, third‐order stream in northern Nova Scotia, Canada, we used redd counts over 12 years to examine the influence of beaver dams and the timing and intensity of autumn rains on spawning activity of Atlantic salmon. Most beaver dams in most years had no detectable effect on the distribution of spawning redds, but in 2004 the density of redds downstream from a three‐dam complex was significantly greater than that above, suggesting the dams were a barrier to many fish. A second complex…

Impact of Beaver Dams on Abundance and Distribution of Anadromous Salmonids in Two Lowland Streams in Lithuania
- Environmental SciencePloS one
- 2015
Increase in abundances of salmonid parr in the stream between the beaver dams and decrease below the dams were recorded in November, at the time of spawning of Atlantic salmon and sea trout, but no significant changes were detected in the sections upstream of the dams.
Field experiments to assess passage of juvenile salmonids across beaver dams during low flow conditions in a tributary to the Klamath River, California, USA
- Environmental SciencebioRxiv
- 2019
By measuring hydraulic conditions at the major flowpaths over and around the dams, this study provides insight into conditions under which juvenile salmonids are able to cross these constructed beaver dams, which should help guide future restoration efforts.
Linking beaver dam affected flow dynamics to upstream passage of Arctic grayling
- Environmental ScienceEcology and evolution

It is demonstrated that upstream passage of fish over beaver dams is strongly correlated with hydrologic conditions with moderate controls by dam‐ and fish‐level characteristics, which provides a framework that can be applied to reduce barrier effects when and where beavers pose a significant threat to the upstream migration of fish populations.

Restoration of a Nova Scotia stream to enhance Atlantic salmon provides few benefits to benthic invertebrates
- Environmental Science
- 2016
This work examined the effect of successful restoration to improve habitat for spawning Atlantic salmon on benthic invertebrate communities at sites where clogging of the bottom cobble with fine silt had been alleviated, and found no substantial changes in total invertebrates, taxa richness, Simpson's diversity index or other community metrics over five years.
