The four isoforms of the catalytic subunit of Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase identified in rats differ in their affinities for ions and ouabain. Moreover, its expression is tissue-specific, developmentally and hormonally regulated. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the influence of age on the ratio and density of these isoforms in crude membrane preparations from rat brain hemispheres, brainstem, heart ventricles and kidneys.
