SUMMARY: The formation and release of cytolytic toxins by Prymnesium parvum are affected by environmental factors. Under conditions of phosphate limitation toxin biosynthesis and release are markedly enhanced. Light is necessary for maximum toxin production. Toxin production and cell multiplication do not depend on identical factors. Cells grown under phosphate limitation in the light are considerably larger than those grown in phosphate-rich media.
