AbstractThe influence of the Kirkendall effect on the sintering of copper-nickel mixtures has been studied by dilatometry and micrography, varying both the composition and granulometry. It has been found that this effect produces significant porosity in the copper grains. The optimum composition for giving maximum porosity depends on the relative size of the powder grains, as is confirmed by the proposed model. This porosity, when significant, slows down shrinkage.
