A method is described for increasing the production of H2 from glucose or lactate by Selenomonas ruminantium by sequential transfers in media containing pregrown Methanobacterium ruminantium. The methanogen uses the H2 formed by the selenomonad to reduce CO2 to CH4. Analysis of fermentation products from glucose showed that lactate was the major product formed from glucose by S. ruminantium alone.
