We investigate a novel single field inflationary scenario which allows a transition between a slow-roll k-inflation with cs of order unity and a ghost inflation with cs ' 0, where cs is the sound speed for the curvature perturbations. We unify the two phases smoothly by appropriately taking into account a higher derivative scordatura term, which is always there from the effective field theory point of view but which becomes important only in the cs ' 0 regime. The model achieves the whole range…

Growth of power spectrum due to decrease of sound speed during inflation

We study the amplification of the curvature perturbations due to a small sound speed and find that its origin is different completely from that due to the ultraslow-roll inflation. This is because when…
Avoidance of Strong Coupling in General Relativity Solutions with a Timelike Scalar Profile in a Class of Ghost-Free Scalar-Tensor Theories.
- PhysicsPhysical review letters

Modified gravity theories can accommodate exact solutions, for which the metric has the same form as the one in general relativity, i.e., stealth solutions. One problem with these stealth solutions…

Recently, the Effective Field Theory (EFT) of perturbations on an arbitrary background metric with a timelike scalar profile was formulated in the context of scalar-tensor theories. Here, we…
Effective field theory of black hole perturbations with timelike scalar profile: formulation

We formulate the Effective Field Theory (EFT) of perturbations within scalar-tensor theories on an inhomogeneous background. The EFT is constructed while keeping a background of a scalar field to be…

I examine the standard formalism of calculating curvature perturbations in inflation at horizon crossing, and derive a general relation which must be satisfied for the horizon-crossing formalism to…
Primordial black holes and slow-roll violation
- Physics

For primordial black holes (PBH) to be the dark matter in single-field inflation, the slow-roll approximation must be violated by at least $\mathcal{O}(1)$ in order to enhance the curvature power…
Relaxing the cosmological constant: a proof of concept

A bstractWe propose a technically natural scenario whereby an initially large cosmological constant (c.c.) is relaxed down to the observed value due to the dynamics of a scalar evolving on a very…
Large power spectrum and primordial black holes in the effective theory of inflation

We study the generation of a large power spectrum, necessary for primordial black hole formation, within the effective theory of single-field inflation. The mechanisms we consider include a…

The standard model of hot big-bang cosmology requires initial conditions which are problematic in two ways: (1) The early universe is assumed to be highly homogeneous, in spite of the fact that…
Ghost Inflation

We propose a new scenario for early cosmology, where an inflationary de Sitter phase is obtained with a ghost condensate. The transition to radiation dominance is triggered by the ghost itself,…
