We propose three new methods of inference for the threshold point in endogenous threshold regression and two specii¬ cation tests designed to assess the presence of endogeneity and threshold ei¬€ects without necessarily relying on instrumentation of the covariates. The i¬ rst inferential method is a parametric two-stage least squares method and is suitable when instruments are available. The second and third methods are based on smoothing the objective function of the integrated dii¬€erence…

Testing for a Threshold in Models with Endogenous Regressors

Using 2SLS estimation, we propose two tests for a threshold in models with endogenous regressors: a sup LR test and a sup Wald test. Here, the 2SLS estimation is not conventional because it uses

NEW CONTROL FUNCTION APPROACHES IN THRESHOLD REGRESSION WITH ENDOGENEITY

This paper studies control function (CF) approaches in endogenous threshold regression where the threshold variable is allowed to be endogenous. We first use a simple example to show that the

A new algorithm to ease the computation of the threshold boundary is put forward, the asymptotics for the least squares estimator are developed, and a new score-type test is proposed to test for the existence of threshold effects.

Threshold Regression with Endogeneity for Short Panels

This paper considers the estimation of dynamic threshold regression models with fixed effects using short panel data. We examine a two-step method, where the threshold parameter is estimated

Nonparametric Sample Splitting

This paper develops a threshold regression model where an unknown relationship between two variables nonparametrically determines the threshold. We allow the observations to be cross-sectionally

STRUCTURAL THRESHOLD REGRESSION

This paper introduces the structural threshold regression (STR) model that allows for an endogenous threshold variable as well as for endogenous regressors. This model provides a parsimonious way of

Using OLS to Estimate and Test for Structural Changes in Models with Endogenous Regressors

We consider the problem of estimating and testing for multiple breaks in a single‐equation framework with regressors that are endogenous, i.e. correlated with the errors. We show that even in the

Consistent model specification tests : Omitted variables and semiparametric functional forms

In this paper, we develop several consistent tests in the context of a nonparametric regression model. These include tests for the significance of a subset of regressors and tests for the

Significance testing in nonparametric regression based on the bootstrap

We propose a test for selecting explanatory variables in nonparametric regression. The test does not need to estimate the conditional expectation function given all the variables but only those which

Sample Splitting and Threshold Estimation

Threshold models have a wide variety of applications in economics. Direct applications include models of separating and multiple equilibria. Other applications include empirical sample splitting when

Testing structural change in time-series nonparametric regression models

We propose two sets of tests for structural change in dynamic nonparametric regression models. The first test is based upon sequential kernel estimation of the regression function and thus termed a

TESTING FOR EXOGENEITY IN THRESHOLD MODELS

Most work in the area of nonlinear econometric modeling is based on a single equation and assumes exogeneity of the explanatory variables. Recently, work by Caner and Hansen (2004) and Psaradakis,

Inference When a Nuisance Parameter Is Not Identified under the Null Hypothesis

Many econometric testing problems involve nuisance parameters which are not identified under the null hypotheses. This paper studies the asymptotic distribution theory for such tests. The asymptotic
