Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is the most common leukemia in the western hemisphere [1]. This disease is associated with increased morbidity and mortality resulting from infection, particularly in the advanced stages [2]. The availability of novel antineoplastic agents with unique activity against chronic lymphocytic leukemia has renewed interest in clinical trials involving patients with this disease [3].
