This paper presents a general procedure for decomposing income inequality measures by income sources. The methods of decomposition proposed are based on the Shapley value and extensions of the Shapley value of transferable utility cooperative games. In particular, we find that Owen’s value can find an interesting application in this context. We show that the axiomatization by the potential of Hart and Mas-Colell remains valid in the presence of the domain restriction of inequality indices. We…
Decompositions of Inequality Measures From the Perspective of the Shapley-Owen Value
This article proposes three new decompositions of inequality measures, drawn from the framework of cooperative game theory which allows to take into consideration players’ interactions impact rather
Cost of Inequality, the Uniform Rule and Cooperative Games
The assessment of income inequality can be investigated looking at the solution concepts of the cooperative game theory. We propose a multi-factorial decomposition of the Atkinson index by income
A note on the decomposability of inequality measures
TLDR
It is shown that this decomposition of income inequality by components fits the definition of two elements: the sum of pure marginal contributions of income components and thesum of the pairwise interactions of all income components.
Inequality of Cameroonian Households: An Analysis Based on Shapley-shorrocks Decomposition
The objective of this study is to explain the evolution of inequality of consumption expenditures of households in Cameroon over the period 1996-2007. To achieve this, we use the Shapley-Shorrocks
A Multi-Factor Inequality Approach to a Transfer Scheme: The Case of Common Agricultural Policy
The purpose of this paper is to propose theoretical foundations on the impact of transfer scheme, e.g. Community Agricultural Policy, on income inequality within European Countries. First, we show
The BIP Trilogy (Bipolarization, Inequality and Polarization): One Saga but Three Different Stories
Abstract Inequality, bi-polarization and polarization are related but distinct concepts aiming at analysing the income distribution. This paper first recalls the main differences between these three
Decomposing Inequality and Social Welfare Changes: The Use of Alternative Welfare Metrics
This paper presents two 'non-welfarist' approaches and one 'welfarist' approach to decompose changes in inequality and social welfare into three components. We distinguish the contributions of
Decomposition of income inequality by attributes: does the race matter in the US?
Using the Shapley income decomposition methodology, we isolate the pure racial contribution to income inequality in regards with the population of Blacks and Whites in the United-States over the

Inequality Decomposition by Population Subgroups
This paper examines the implications of imposing a weak aggregation condition on inequality indices, so that the overall inequality value can be computed from information concerning the size, mean,
Potential, value, and consistency
Let P be a real-valued function defined on the space of cooperative games with transferable utility, satisfying the following condition: In every game, the marginal contributions of all players
The Consistency and Potential for Values of Games with Coalition Structure
VALUES OF GAMES WITH A PRIORI UNIONS
We study here the problem of modifying the (Shapley) value of a characteristic function game so as to take into account the possibility that some players — because of personal or political affinities

Inequality Decompositions By Factor Components
This paper disaggregates the income of individuals or households into different factor components, such as earnings, investment income, and transfer payments, and considers how to assess the

Cooperative games with coalition structures
Many game-theoretic solution notions have been defined or can be defined not only with reference to the all-player coalition, but also with reference to an arbitrary coalition structure. In this
