Uncoupling of nitric-oxide synthase (NOS) by deficiency of the substrate L-arginine or the cofactor (6R)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) is known to generate the reactive oxygen species H2O2 and superoxide. Discrimination between these two compounds is usually achieved by spin trapping of superoxide.
