Abstract This preliminary report shows that, using intermittent heat treatment of mass cultures of Tetrahymena, 85 per cent of the cells can be induced to undergo division simultaneously. Three successive maxima of divisions have been observed. The cell populations used represent total cell numbers of anything between 5,000 and 1 2 million corresponding to dry weights of the order 0.03 to 5 mg.
