Glucocorticoid receptors (GR) exist in several preoptic and hypothalamic nuclei that participate in neuroendocrine control of anterior pituitary function. GR may mediate effects of endogenous steroids on hormone secretion, since intracerebral administration of exogenous ligands alters plasma levels of several pituitary hormones.
