Surgical extirpation of the otocyst on embryonic day (E) 3 in chick embryos prevents formation of the cochlear nerve and results in development of an aberrant axonal projection from the contralateral cochlear nucleus (nucleus magnocellularis, NM) to the deafferented NM.
