BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Staphylococcus aureus is an important agent in hospital and community-associated infections, causing high morbidity and mortality. Introduction of the new antimicrobial classes for this pathogen has been usually followed by the emergence of resistant strains through multiple mechanisms.
