Spike potentials were recorded from single, afferent fibres in the pigeon auditory nerve. Pure-tone stimuli were presented in quiet and in combination with wide band noise. Presented alone, tones produced tuned response areas; noise generally drove spike rate to well above the spontaneous rate measured in quiet. When presented in combination with noise, tones up to 75 dB SPL at frequencies far from the fibre's response area had no effect on the noise-driven spike rate.
