  title={Individual growth and seasonal cycle of Daphnia middendorffiana in an Alpine lake [Translation from: Memorie dell'Istituto Italiano di Idrobiologia Dott.Marco de Marchi 26 41-83, 1970]},
  author={Ireneo Ferrari},
The problem of the peculiar reproductive biology of the cladoceran Daphnia middendorffiana is investigated from a cytological viewpoint, and by direct observation the meiotic phenomena of the eggs both subitaneous and resting is studied. and during maturation, the true mechanism of the succession of reproductive phases of different ecological significance. Samples were collected in the Italian Alpine Lake of Campo 4°.

A dark shell hiding great variability: a molecular insight into the evolution and conservation of melanic Daphnia populations in the Alps
This work inferred phylogenetic relationships of melanic high-mountain populations in order to disentangle their history and clarify the colonization patterns of alpine populations, suggesting that dark populations originated from at least two ancestors, one genetically close to boreal haplotypes, the other apparently related to refugial populations that survived in southern Europe. Mechanisms Facilitating Dispersal of Dormant Eggs in a Planktonic Crustacean
This chapter broadly summarize the ultimate reasons of spatial dispersal of freshwater organisms and the modes and routes of their dislocation, and focuses on the morphological, behavioural and life history adaptations that facilitate spatial dispersals of the dormant forms of a model planktonic crustacean, Daphnia. Fecundity compensation and tolerance to a sterilizing pathogen in Daphnia
It is discussed how, by increasing host fitness without targeting parasite densities, fecundity compensation is consistent with the functional definition of tolerance, and how infection‐induced life‐history shifts are not traditionally considered to be part of the immune response, but may crucially reduce harm caused by disease. A model approach to evaluate the effect of temperature and food concentration on individual life-history and population dynamics of Daphnia
This model approach represents a comprehensive framework for studying Daphnia both at laboratory conditions and in the field, and compared outputs of the stage-structured model with predictions by two other models having analogous parameterisation. Expand
Comparative toxicity of three differently shaped carbon nanomaterials on Daphnia magna: does a shape effect exist?
Abstract The acute toxicity of three differently shaped carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) was studied on Daphnia magna, comparing the induced effects and looking for the toxic mechanisms. We used carbonExpand
Measuring parasite fitness under genetic and thermal variation
It is found that infectivity was most important for parasite fitness and depended mainly on the combination of host and parasite genotypes, and the potential for genetic specificities to drive frequency-dependent coevolution in this system is robust to thermal variation. Expand
