Seventy skins of three mantellid frog species from Madagascan swamp-forest habitats, Mantella aurantiaca, M. crocea, and M. milotympanum, were individually examined for skin alkaloids using GC/MS. These poison frogs were found to differ significantly in their alkaloid composition from species of Mantella originating from non-flooded rainforest in eastern Madagascar, which were examined in earlier work. Only 16 of the previously detected 106 alkaloids were represented among the 60 alkaloids from…

Piperidine alkaloids from fire ants are not sequestered by the green and black poison frog (Dendrobates auratus)
- Chemistry, BiologyChemoecology
- 2021
It is possible that D. auratus are unable to sequester fire ant piperidines due to their long hydrocarbon side chains, a feature that makes them structurally different than most known alkaloids in poison frogs.
Seasonal changes in diet and chemical defense in the Climbing Mantella frog (Mantella laevigata)
- Biology, Environmental SciencePloS one
- 2018
This work found that frog diet differed between the wet and dry seasons, where frogs had a more diverse diet in the wet season and consumed a higher percentage of ants in the dry season, suggesting that alkaloid profiles are relatively robust against short-term environmental perturbations.
Seasonal Changes in Diet and Toxicity in the Climbing Mantella Frog (Mantella Laevigata)

Investigating how seasonal environmental variation influences poison frog toxin profiles through changes in the diet of the Climbing Mantella (Mantella laevigata) suggests that toxin profiles are relatively robust against short-term environmental perturbations.

Sequestered Alkaloid Defenses in the Dendrobatid Poison Frog Oophaga pumilio Provide Variable Protection from Microbial Pathogens
- Biology, Environmental ScienceJournal of Chemical Ecology
- 2018
The present study provides the first evidence that alkaloid variation in a dendrobatid poison frog is associated with differences in inhibition of anuran pathogens, and offers further support that alkAloid defenses in poison frogs confer protection against both pathogens and predators.
Mitochondrial Introgression, Color Pattern Variation, and Severe Demographic Bottlenecks in Three Species of Malagasy Poison Frogs, Genus Mantella
- BiologyGenes
- 2019
The monophyly of the Mantella madagascariensis group is confirmed, and the demographic analyses show a common, severe and recent demographic contraction, inferred to be in temporal coincidence with the massive deforestation events that took place in the past 1000 years.
Phenotypic and genetic diversity in aposematic Malagasy poison frogs (genus Mantella)
- Biology, Environmental ScienceEcology and evolution
- 2019
The study suggests that several mechanisms—including hybridization, selection, and drift—are contributing to phenotypic diversity in Malagasy poison frogs, and underscores the need for a reevaluation of how polymorphic and polytypic populations and species are classified.
The impact of multiple climatic and geographic factors on the chemical defences of Asian toads (Bufo gargarizans Cantor)
- Environmental ScienceScientific Reports
- 2019
It is indicated that the evolution of phenotypic plasticity in chemical defences may depend at least partly on the geographic variation of defensive toxins and their climatic context.
