Air temperature data of Athens are analysed to point out the variations caused by natural controls and anthropogenic activities. The study of the temperature records from 1858 to 1982 at Athens, on the southeast coast of Greece, supports the findings of earlier studies which indicate that the period of the 1920's to the 1950's were, climatologically, warmer than the preceding 60 yr and after about 1960. In particular, minimum temperatures show an increase from the 1920's to the 1980's, possibly…
Recent trend analysis of mean air temperature in Greece based on homogenized data
Numerous studies analyze the temperature variations in the Mediterranean area due to the anticipated impact of climate change in this part of the world. A number of studies examined the temperature
Trends and patterns in the climate of Libya (1945-2010)
Climate change is one of the most important issues affecting the world at the beginning of the twenty-first century. This thesis explores changes and trends within the principal climatic parameters
Analysis of the long-term precipitation series at Athens, Greece
In this paper, the characteristics of the long-term precipitation series at Athens (1858–1985) have been statistically analyzed. This study covers both the history and the analysis of the data. The
Some statistical characteristics of air temperature variations at four Mediterranean stations
SummaryIn this paper some statistical characteristics of air temperature variations over the Mediterranean are presented. The study is based on temperature data at stations in Marseille (1851–1985),
Temperature trends in Libya over the second half of the 20th century
This paper investigates spatial variability of temperature trends over Libya in the second half of the 20th century. The study is based on complete and homogeneous time series of minimum, maximum,
Analysis of cold spells in the Greek region
The extreme phenomenon of cold-spell events in the Greek region was investigated in this study by using a combined deterministic-stochastic model, along with 31 yr daily minimum temperature data from
Annual and Seasonal Climatic Analysis of Surface Air Temperature Variations at Six Southern Mediterranean Stations
Summary Variations of surface temperature are studied at six southern Mediterranean stations: Marakesh (1910–1991), Alger (1823–1991), Tripoli (1944–1991), Alexandria (1942–1991), Amman (1923–1991),
Analysis of hot spell characteristics in the Greek region
In the present study, hot spell conditions over the Greek region during the warm period (June to September) were examined by using daily maximum temperature data from 16 meteorolog- ical stations of
Recent variations in 700 hPa geopotential heights in summer over Europe and the Middle East, and their influence on other Meteorological factors
SummaryRecent variations in atmospheric circulation in the eastern Mediterranean are analyzed and discussed. Interdecadal differences in mean monthly 700 hPa geopotential heights for June, July, and

Variations in Surface Air Temperatures: Part 1. Northern Hemisphere, 1881–1980
Abstract We have produced, using objective techniques, a long-term series of average Northern Hemisphere temperatures based on monthly mean station data gridded on a 5° latitude by 10° longitude
Abstract A general survey is made of the feasibility of using trends in long-period temperature records as representations of climatic change. A breakdown of all probable significant sources of
Fluctuations of the Northern Hemisphere Mean Surface Air Temperature during Recent 100Years, Estimated by Optimum Interpolation
Analyses of the hemispherical or global network data of the surface air temperature during recent 100 years have been performed by several authors. Some quantitative disagreements are noticed among
Indications of the Urban Heat Island in Athens, Greece
Abstract The analysis of air temperature data for a period of 22 years in the meteorological network stations in the greater Athens area shows clearly the effect of the urban heat island due to the
Northern Hemisphere Surface Air Temperature Variations: 1851–1984
Abstract A new compilation of monthly mean surface air temperature for the Northern Hemisphere for 1851–1984 is presented based on land-based meteorological station data and fixed-position weather
A review of urban climatology
The review attempts to elucidate the history of interest and the developing research work done in the field of urban climatology, with special emphasis on temperature . . References are made to the
Effect of Changing Observation Time on Mean Temperature
Hourly temperature data for eight first-order stations in the United States have been used to determine the effect of observation time on mean temperature derived in the usual way from 24-hr maximum

The structure of heat islands
Cities as well as ocean islands create mesoscale circulations in the atmosphere on a horizontal scale closely related to the size of the city or island. Contrast in albedo, heat capacity, and hence
