Associations between two diseases may be revealed by clinical observations of their simultaneous appearance in the same community (e.g. herpes zoster and chicken pox) or of their occurrence in the same person (e.g. pernicious anaemia and subacute combined sclerosis of the spinal cord), by frequency of mention of the diseases conjointly on death certificates, or by statistical studies inspired by a suspicion that an association exists.
