It is concluded that two prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors partially reverse the alpha-adrenergic inhibition of the AIR to glucose caused by Epi, without affecting other adrenergic events.

Effects of theophylline on insulin receptors and insulin action in the adipocyte
- Biology, MedicineMolecular and Cellular Biochemistry
- 2004
The results suggest that theophylline impairs insulin action at a post-receptor level and, at higher concentrations, by a decrease of receptor binding, the reduction of insulin receptor affinity probably reflects ATP depletion of the adipocyte, and the xanthine inhibits glucose transport independently from its effects on lipolysis.

It is tentatively suggested that adenosine may be involved in the physiological control of lipolysis and that this nucleoside has its site of action on the cell membrane.
