Against a backdrop of rising global surface temperature, the stability of the Indian monsoon rainfall over the past century has been a puzzle. By using a daily rainfall data set, we show (i) significant rising trends in the frequency and the magnitude of extreme rain events and (ii) a significant decreasing trend in the frequency of moderate events over central India during the monsoon seasons from 1951 to 2000. The seasonal mean rainfall does not show a significant trend, because the…

Decrease of light rain events in summer associated with a warming environment in China during 1961–2005

Based on daily rainfall and temperature data for the summer monsoon season in mainland China during 1961–2005, this paper demonstrated an overall decreasing trend in the frequency of light rain

Regional changes in extreme monsoon rainfall deficit and excess in India

Analysis of Increasing Heavy Rainfall Activity over Western India, Particularly Gujarat State, in the Past Decade

The study of spatial and temporal variations of rainfall during monsoon has been studied by many scientists. India receives about 80 % of total annual rain during the southwest summer monsoon season

Variability and Trends of Extreme Rainfall and Rainstorms

In this chapter, variability and long-term trends of heavy rainfall events and rainstorms over India during the monsoon season (June to September) are documented. For analyzing extreme rainfall

Is summer monsoon rainfall over the west coast of India decreasing?

In this study, long‐term changes in the summer monsoon rainfall over the west coast of India and adjoining eastern Arabian Sea (WCA) have been examined independently using rain gauge adjusted

A threefold rise in widespread extreme rain events over central India

Against the backdrop of a declining monsoon, the number of extreme rain events is on the rise over central India, driven by an increasing variability of the low-level monsoon westerlies over the Arabian Sea.

A New Metric for Indian Monsoon Rainfall Extremes

AbstractExtreme monsoon rainfall in India has disastrous consequences, including significant socioeconomic impacts. However, little is known about the overall trends and climate factors associated

Long-term changes in the within-season temporal profile of southwest monsoon over western India

This paper presents results of a study of long term trends in the characteristics of the within-season temporal profile of southwest monsoon rainfall over western India during the last five decades

Evaluation of rainfall extremes. Northeast and West coast regions of India as case study

The response of climate change is the increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. An attempt has been made to study the trends in heavy rainfall amount and the highest rainfall

The changing character of precipitation

Abstract From a societal, weather, and climate perspective, precipitation intensity, duration, frequency, and phase are as much of concern as total amounts, as these factors determine the disposition

Global observed changes in daily climate extremes of temperature and precipitation

A suite of climate change indices derived from daily temperature and precipitation data, with a primary focus on extreme events, were computed and analyzed. By setting an exact formula for each index

Changes in Tropical Cyclone Number, Duration, and Intensity in a Warming Environment

A large increase was seen in the number and proportion of hurricanes reaching categories 4 and 5 and the number of cyclones and cyclone days has decreased in all basins except the North Atlantic during the past decade.

Observed coherent changes in climatic extremes during the second half of the twentieth century

A new global dataset of derived indicators has been compiled to clarify whether fre- quency and/or severity of climatic extremes changed during the second half of the 20th century. This period

Northern hemisphere temperatures during the past millennium: Inferences, uncertainties, and limitations

Building on recent studies, we attempt hemispheric temperature reconstructions with proxy data networks for the past millennium. We focus not just on the reconstructions, but the uncertainties

Global analyses of sea surface temperature, sea ice, and night marine air temperature since the late nineteenth century

[1] We present the Met Office Hadley Centre's sea ice and sea surface temperature (SST) data set, HadISST1, and the nighttime marine air temperature (NMAT) data set, HadMAT1. HadISST1 replaces the

Meteorites and the early solar system

The present work discusses topics in the source regions for meteorites, their secondary processing, irradiation effects on meteorites, solar system chronology, the early solar system, the chemistry
