Males of many species are characterized by alternative mating tactics. In bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus), some males delay maturation and become ‘‘parentals’’ while other males mature precociously and become ‘‘cuckolders.’’ Parentals use an overt, territorial mating tactic, defending a nest and courting females.
