A new variant of SARS-CoV-2, B.1.1.7/VOC202012/01, was identified in the UK in December-2020. Direct estimates of its potential to enhance transmission are limited.Nose and throat swabs from 28-September-2020 to 2-January-2021 in the UK’s nationally representative surveillance study were tested by RT-PCR for three genes (N, S and ORF1ab). Those positive only on ORF1ab+N, S-gene target failures (SGTF), are compatible with B.1.1.7/VOC202012/01. We investigated cycle threshold (Ct) values (a proxy…

Impact of vaccination on new SARS-CoV-2 infections in the United Kingdom
TLDR
Overall, COVID-19 vaccination reduced the number of new SARS-CoV-2 infections, with the largest benefit received after two vaccinations and against symptomatic and high viral burden infections, and with no evidence of a difference between the BNT162b2 and ChAdOx1 vaccines.
Impact of vaccination on new SARS-CoV-2 infections in the UK

Overall, COVID-19 vaccination reduced the number of new SARS-CoV-2 infections, with the largest benefit received after two vaccinations and against symptomatic and high viral burden infections, and with no evidence of difference between the BNT162b2 and ChAdOx1 vaccines.
Ct threshold values, a proxy for viral load in community SARS-CoV-2 cases, demonstrate wide variation across populations and over time
TLDR
Marked variation in community SARS-CoV-2 Ct values suggests that they could be a useful epidemiological early-warning indicator.
Impact of vaccination on SARS-CoV-2 cases in the community: a population-based study using the UK COVID-19 Infection Survey
TLDR
Greater reductions in symptomatic infections and/or infections with a higher viral burden are reflected in reduced rates of hospitalisations/deaths, but highlight the potential for limited ongoing transmission from asymptomatic infections in vaccinated individuals.
Increased transmission of SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.1.7 (VOC 2020212/01) is not accounted for by a replicative advantage in primary airway cells or antibody escape
TLDR
It is demonstrated that there is no difference in viral replication between B.1.1 .1.7 and other contemporaneous SARS-CoV-2 strains in primary human airway epithelial (HAE) cells.
Increased hazard of death in community-tested cases of SARS-CoV-2 Variant of Concern 202012/01
TLDR
Analysis of a large database of SARS-CoV-2 community test results and COVID-19 deaths for England suggests that VOC 202012/01 is not only more transmissible than preexisting Sars-Cov-2 variants but may also cause more severe illness.
Biological Properties of SARS-CoV-2 Variants: Epidemiological Impact and Clinical Consequences
TLDR
Key information is examined and provided on SARS-CoV-2 VOCs, including their transmissibility, infectivity rate, disease severity, affinity for angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors, viral load, reproduction number, vaccination effectiveness, and vaccine breakthrough.
Monitoring populations at increased risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection in the community
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic is rapidly evolving, with emerging variants and fluctuating control policies. Real-time population screening and identification of groups in whom positivity is

Viral load in community SARS-CoV-2 cases varies widely and temporally
TLDR
Community SARS-CoV-2 infections show marked variation in viral load and Ct values could be a useful epidemiological early-warning indicator, suggesting lower viral burden.
Resurgence of SARS-CoV-2 in England: detection by community antigen surveillance
TLDR
Although low levels of transmission persisted in England through to mid-summer 2020, the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 is now increasing and there is evidence of accelerating transmission at the end of August and beginning of September.
S-variant SARS-CoV-2 is associated with significantly higher viral loads in samples tested by ThermoFisher TaqPath RT-PCR
TLDR
This analysis suggests that patients whose samples exhibit the S-dropout profile in the TaqPath test are more likely to have high viral loads at the time of sampling.
Epidemiological Investigation of New SARS-CoV-2 Variant of Concern 202012/01 in England
TLDR
The assay identified a drop in S-gene target detection among positive samples due to the circulation of a new SARS-CoV-2 Variant of Concern (VOC) designated as 202012/01, which identifies the rapid spread of the variant across the country.
Community prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in England during April to September 2020: Results from the ONS Coronavirus Infection Survey
TLDR
Important risk factors for testing positive varied substantially between the initial and second periods of higher positivity rates, and a substantial proportion of infections were in individuals not reporting symptoms, indicating that continued monitoring for SARS-CoV-2 in the community will be important for managing the epidemic moving forwards.
Occurrence and transmission potential of asymptomatic and presymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections: A living systematic review and meta-analysis
TLDR
A living systematic review of SARS-CoV-2 literature found high heterogeneity in studies that were not designed to measure persistently asymptomatic infection, high risks of selection and information bias, and the absence of studies about variants of concern or in people who have been vaccinated.
Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 Lineage B.1.1.7 in England: Insights from linking epidemiological and genetic data
TLDR
It is shown that the SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.7, now designated Variant of Concern 202012/01 (VOC) by Public Health England, originated in the UK in late Summer to early Autumn 2020 and has a substantial transmission advantage over non-VOC lineages.
S gene dropout patterns in SARS-CoV-2 tests suggest spread of the H69del/V70del mutation in the US.
TLDR
Analysis of RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2 tests performed at Helix identifies a rise in S gene dropout in the US starting in early October, and sees a recent expansion in the Eastern part of the US, concentrated in MA, OH, and FL.
Estimated transmissibility and severity of novel SARS-CoV-2 Variant of Concern 202012/01 in England
TLDR
The estimates suggest that control measures of a similar stringency to the national lockdown implemented in England in November 2020 are unlikely to reduce the effective reproduction number Rt to less than 1, unless primary schools, secondary schools, and universities are also closed.
