BACKGROUND Atherosclerotic lesions are mainly composed of macrophages and T lymphocytes. Specific T helper type 1 (Th1) cytokines and interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) inducible chemokines have been shown to be present in these lesions, modulating the local immunologic response.
