Fat depot sizes peak in middle age but decrease by advanced old age. This phenomenon is associated with ectopic fat deposition, decreased adipocyte size, impaired differentiation of preadipocytes into fat cells, decreased adipogenic transcription factor expression, and increased fat tissue inflammatory cytokine generation. To define the mechanisms contributing to impaired adipogenesis with aging, we examined the release of TNFalpha, which inhibits adipogenesis, and the expression of CCAAT…

Advanced oxidation protein products inhibit differentiation and activate inflammation in 3T3‐L1 preadipocytes
TLDR
Exposure to increased levels of AOPPs inhibited accumulation of intracellular triglyceride and decreased the expression of the essential markers of matured adipocytes, such as adipocyte fatty‐acid‐binding protein (aP2), CAAT/enhancer‐bindingprotein (C/EBP)‐α, and peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor (PPAR)‐γ, in response to standard adipogenic induction.
Aging, Depot Origin, and Preadipocyte Gene Expression
TLDR
Age-related changes in preadipocyte gene expression differ among depots, potentially contributing to fat redistribution and dysfunction, as occurs in fat tissue.
Gene expression profile of mouse white adipose tissue during inflammatory stress: age‐dependent upregulation of major procoagulant factors
TLDR
It is indicated that adipose tissue is a major organ expressing genes for multiple inflammatory and coagulant factors and that the expression of many of these is significantly altered by aging during acute inflammation.
The Aging of Adipocytes Increases Expression of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines Chronologically
TLDR
It is demonstrated that aging augmented chronic inflammation through the NF-κB signaling pathway in adipocytes and adipose tissue.
Adipogenic differentiation is impaired in replicative senescent human subcutaneous adipose-derived stromal/progenitor cells.
TLDR
Cellular senescence contributes to dysfunctions in adipose-derived stromal/progenitor cell replication, adipogenesis, triglyceride storage, and adipokine secretion.
Fat tissue, aging, and cellular senescence
TLDR
A hypothetical model in which cellular stress and preadipocyte overutilization with aging induce cellular senescence, leading to impaired adipogenesis, failure to sequester lipotoxic fatty acids, inflammatory cytokine and chemokine generation, and innate and adaptive immune response activation is proposed.
Targeting senescent cells enhances adipogenesis and metabolic function in old age
TLDR
This study indicates targeting senescent cells or their products may alleviate age-related dysfunction of progenitors, adipose tissue, and metabolism.
Novel role of autophagy-associated Pik3c3 gene in gonadal white adipose tissue browning in aged C57/Bl6 male mice
TLDR
The results suggest that altered adipose tissue characteristics due to autophagy inhibition early in life has beneficial effects that promote adipOSE tissue browning and improves glucose tolerance in late-life.
Aging and Regional Differences in Fat Cell Progenitors – A Mini-Review
TLDR
How inherent, age-related, depot-dependent alterations in preadipocyte function contribute to age- related fat tissue redistribution and metabolic dysfunction is considered.

Increased CUG Triplet Repeat-binding Protein-1 Predisposes to Impaired Adipogenesis with Aging*
TLDR
Preadipocyte CUGBP1 abundance and activity increases, resulting in enhanced translation of the C/EBPβ-LIP isoform, thereby blocking effects of adipogenic transcription factors, predisposing preadipocytes from old animals to resist adipogenesis.
Altered expression of C/EBP family members results in decreased adipogenesis with aging.
TLDR
Processes intrinsic to adipose cells involving changes in C/EBP family members contribute to impaired adipogenesis and altered fat tissue function with aging, and are potentially reversible.
Fat depot origin affects adipogenesis in primary cultured and cloned human preadipocytes.
TLDR
Regional variation in adipogenesis depends on differences at the level of transcription factor expression and is a trait conferred on daughter cells.
Adipogenesis and aging: does aging make fat go MAD?
Aging results in paradoxical susceptibility of fat cell progenitors to lipotoxicity.
TLDR
Preadipocyte fatty acid handling changes with aging, with increased susceptibly to lipotoxicity and impaired fatty acid-induced adipogenesis and beta-oxidation and mitochondrial dysfunction may contribute.
Modulation of rat preadipocyte adipose conversion by androgenic status: involvement of C/EBPs transcription factors.
TLDR
It is demonstrated that in preadipocytes androgenic deprivation affects site-specifically the expression of LPL, an early marker of adipogenesis and of C/EBPalpha, a master regulator of adipocyte proliferation and differentiation.
Preadipocytes mediate lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation and insulin resistance in primary cultures of newly differentiated human adipocytes.
TLDR
It is demonstrated that LPS induces nuclear factor-kappaB- and MAPK-dependent proinflammatory cytokine/chemokine expression primarily in preadipocytes, which triggers the suppression of PPARgamma activity and insulin responsiveness in human adipocytes.
Genistein inhibits CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein β (C/EBPβ) activity and 3T3-L1 adipogenesis by increasing C/EBP homologous protein expression
TLDR
Results indicate that genistein blocks adipogenesis and C/EBPbeta activity by increasing the level of C-EBP homologous protein and possibly by inhibiting the tyrosine phosphorylation of C/ EBPbeta.
Age-related adipose tissue mRNA expression of ADD1/SREBP1, PPARgamma, lipoprotein lipase, and GLUT4 glucose transporter in rhesus monkeys.
TLDR
The findings indicate that aging may have an effect on the adipocyte differentiation program and this effect appears to be gene specific.
Adipose tissue-derived tumor necrosis factor-alpha activity is elevated in older rats.
TLDR
Mature rats had twice as much AT-TNF activity as the young in both the epididymal (EPI) and retroperitoneal (Retro) fat pads, and protein levels were higher in young rats, suggesting that these animals may secrete an inhibitor that reduces AT- TNF activity.
