Nucleoside analogs used in cancer chemotherapy and in treatment of virus infections are phosphorylated in cells by nucleoside and nucleotide kinases to their pharmacologically active form. The phosphorylated nucleoside analogs are incorporated into DNA and cause cell death or inhibit viral replication.
