Escherichia coli O157:H7 causes bloody diarrhoea, haemorrhagic colitis and life-threatening complications like haemolytic uremic syndrome and thrombotic thrombocitopenic purpura. Among foods associated with outbreaks caused by this pathogen, hamburger is the most common one.
