Initiation of reverse transcription in hepadnaviruses (hepatitis B viruses) depends on the specific binding of an RNA signal (the packaging signal, epsilon) on the pregenomic RNA template by the viral reverse transcriptase (RT) and is primed by the RT itself (protein priming).
