Chimaeric fusion genes derived by chromosome translocation are common molecular abnormalities in paediatric leukaemia and provide unique markers for the malignant clone. They have been especially informative in studies with twins concordant for leukaemia and in retrospective scrutiny of archived neonatal blood spots.
