Recent studies suggest that Self-organizing Time-Division Multiple Access (STDMA) might be a better medium access strategy in inter-vehicle communication networks than Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA), especially when considering safety focused applications. Although it is necessary to completely understand a protocol and the effect of its `turning knobs' on performance before adoption, STDMA has not yet been subjected to such rigorous treatment in the literature. In order to address this…

Chalmers Publication Library Understanding differences in MAC performance

TLDR
While an extended carrier sensing range is only beneficial for CSMA, the existence and severity of fading is far less detrimental for Self-organizing Time-Division Multiple Access than forCSMA.

Analytical study of Self Organizing TDMA for V2X communications

TLDR
An analytical model of S-TDMA is provided to compute the Slot Occupation Distribution and Packet Level Incoordination in closed-form expression and an asymptotic evaluation of the impact of various configuration parameters on the communication performance of S (Self-Organizing TDMA).

Analysis and Evaluation of Self-Organizing TDMA for Industrial Applications

TLDR
Self-Organizing Time Division Multiple Access is analysed to assess its suitability for use in industrial applications and several metrics such as channel access delay, slot occupation distribution (SOD), packet losses and packet inter-arrival time (PIAT) have been evaluated.

Performance Analysis of STDMA and RA-TDMA Wireless Protocols in Industrial Scenarios

TLDR
This paper compares two protocols that rate particularly well in such trade-off, namely Self-Organizing Time Division Multiple Access (STDMA) and Reconfigurable and Adaptive Time Division multiple Access (RATDMA).

Multi-Layer Problems and Solutions in VANETs: A Review

TLDR
This paper aims to highlight multilayer challenges concerning the performance of the VANETs, the already proposed solutions, and the possible future work to improve the performance and support scalability in VANets.

Literature Survey on Recent Progress in Inter-Vehicle Communication Simulations

TLDR
The intention of this survey is to provide a comprehensive overview of publications concerning IVC simulations of the year 2013 and to see how IVC simulation has changed since 2009.

STDMA for Inter-satellite Communication in Low Earth Orbit

TLDR
This paper addresses an adaption of STDMA in order to reduce the overall development costs of novel space missions and simulation results show that STDMA has a higher packet reception probability in the scenario and thereby a better reliability.

Routing protocol Analysis for Heterogeneous Nodes in a Dynamic and Sparse Environment

TLDR
Simulation results show that choosing a single MANET protocol does not prove to be effective for the different scenarios considered in the network, and a system level simulation study is adopted for the OceanNet network topology using NS-3.

Stabilization time comparison of CSMA and Self-Organizing TDMA for different channel loads in VANETS

TLDR
STDMA shows a reliable performance and better predictability, regardless of the number of vehicles accessing the channel, and it also provides lower stabilization time in comparison to IEEE802.11p MAC algorithm for vehicle densities higher than 350 vehicles sending periodic messages every 500ms.

How Severe Is the Hidden Terminal Problem in VANETs When Using CSMA and STDMA?

TLDR
The results reveal that the presence of hidden terminals does not significantly affect the performance of the two MAC protocols and STDMA shows a higher packet reception probability for all settings due to the synchronized packet transmissions.

On the Ability of the 802.11p MAC Method and STDMA to Support Real-Time Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication

TLDR
This paper shows that vehicles using CSMA/CA can experience unacceptable channel access delays and, therefore, 802.11p does not support real-time communications, and presents a potential remedy for this problem, namely, the use of self-organizing time division multiple access (STDMA).

TLDR
This paper proposes an adaptive contention window mechanism, which dynamically selects the optimal backoff window according to the estimate of the number of contending stations, and shows that this technique leads to stable behavior, and it outperforms the standard protocol when the network load and theNumber of mobile stations are high.

Characterization, avoidance and repair of packet collisions in inter-vehicle communication networks

TLDR
The resulting high fidelity simulations enable performance optimizations across multiple layers, and are used in the second part of this thesis to evaluate the impact of fast-fading channel characteristics on Carrier-Sense Multiple Access, and to quantify the benefit of successive interference cancellation.
