The magnetron H- ion sources developed in the 1970s currently in operation at Fermilab provide beam to the rest of the accelerator complex. A series of modifications to these sources have been tested in a dedicated offline test stand with the aim of improving different operational issues. The solenoid type gas valve was tested as an alternative to the piezoelectric gas valve in order to avoid its temperature dependence. A new cesium oven was designed and tested in order to avoid glass pieces…

PRELIMINARY EXPERIMENTS IN CAESIUM DELIVERY AND GETTERING ON THE ISIS VESPA SOURCE

Caesium capture by graphite at various temperatures 20 300 ◦C in the VESPA ion source test stand was explored in a preliminary experiment. An accompanying experiment was set up to evaluate the

Reduction of beam current noise in the FNAL magnetron ion source

The new FNAL Injector Line with a circular dimple magnetron ion source has been operational since December of 2012. Since the new injector came on line there have been variations in the H- beam

Performance of the Magnetron H− Source on the BNL 200 MeV Linac

A magnetron surface plasma H− ion source has been used at Brookhaven since 1982 for injection into the 200 MeV linac. Since 1989, this source has operated with a circular aperture, injecting into an

A new solid state extractor pulser for the FNAL magnetron ion source.

The pulser design and operational experience to date is discussed and the new solid state pulsers installed on the FNAL magnetron ion source are discussed.

THE EFFECTS OF NITROGEN GAS ON THE PRODUCTION OF NEGATIVE HYDROGEN IONS

Modulation affects the quality of the ion beam extracted from an ion source. A decrease in modulation has been found in a Penning source by adding small amounts of nitrogen gas. The focus of this

Potential for improving of the compact surface plasma sources

Factors limiting the operating lifetime of Compact Surface Plasma Sources (CSPS) are analyzed and possibilities for lifetime enhancement are considered. Noiseless discharges with lower gas and cesium

Review of negative hydrogen ion sources

In the early seventies, significant discoveries for H{sup {minus}} ion sources were made at Novosibirsk. These and many improvements which followed have led to useful accelerator sources. With these
